Did you know that you are rarely stuck with poor quality and quantity of lighting in your home? Most people assume that it is a big undertaking to change fixtures in their home, so they live with subpar performance. While, unfortunately, changing the locations of fixtures takes a bit more work, improving the lighting from current locations is easy.

With lighting, technology abounds, so there are actually many options to be able to keep your existing housings in the ceilings, but dramatically improve how they perform. See below for some innovative ways to improve your home.

RETROFIT OPTIONS FOR STANDARD 6" OPENINGS

These fixtures have been a standard in the build community for decades. Arguably the most common recessed light fixtures in residential construction, this type gives you plenty of design and performance upgrades.

REPLACEMENT TRIMS WITH UPGRADES

These are the most common upgrade and even some builders use LED trims on standard enclosures in new construction. The best bang for the buck comes in the form of an Aispire all in one option. It upgrades the fixture to higher output, adds the ability to adjust the fixture to move the light to walls or objects, is warm dim to look like incandescent, give extremely high quality light output to see art and colors better, AND allows you to adjust the beam spread without having to change optics. Let’s say you move some furniture around, with this fixture upgrade, you can adjust the light to the area and focus the beam of light to the object.

This option is one of the most economical options and is $80 each.

REPLACEMENT TRIM, UPGRADED GALLERY QUALITY LIGHT, REDUCE THE SIZE OF THE OPENING, AND MAKE IT TRIMLESS

One of the coolest ways to upgrade a traditional 6” fixture is to reduce the aperture down. With DMF, we have the ability to use a 2” aperture in a 6” enclosure.
With some of the best dimming, art gallery quality of light at over 98 CRI, and the ability to mud in the fixture to elevate the aesthetic.

This is certainly a premium option because you are getting high performance and designer look, so they will come in at $350 each.

RETROFIT OPTIONS FOR MR16 HALOGEN ENCLOSURES

(TYPICALLY 4" OPENINGS)

These fixtures were originally designed to work with 12V MR16 bulbs. Over the years, many of them have been installed or upgraded to LED versions of the lamps. Previously limited to one or two choices in bulbs, we now have some new technology that allow us to drastically improve output and quality of light. While not as many options, there are still some good and great upgrade options for MLV (magnetic low voltage) fixtures.

A QUALITY LED BULB WITH WARM DIM

While warm dim is not required to produce quality lighting out of a fixture like this, it does a good job of replicating how an incandescent bulb would perform when dimmed. When it is softer illumination, it will have a warmer color. When it is brighter, it will have a crisper white light.

This is the most economical way to get better performance for lower cost. Our Soraa options have art quality LED bulbs with warm dim and will run $49 each. High output, static white will run $35 each.

A RETROFIT TRIM DESIGNED FOR MR16

If you care about the quality of light AND want to get more light, while improving the look of the trims in the ceiling – this is your option. Definitely more of a premium option, but with the most dramatic change in light, these new trims were designed from the ground up to be the best possible option for restaurants, art galleries, and similar who care about lighting in the space. These come with the highest output available and with museum quality of light, along with a 7 year warranty. This unique product comes from Clarte, the company who provided architectural lighting for inside the Las Vegas Sphere and provides lighting to museums, to give you an idea of where they stand on the performance.

These will run $325. Be careful, they are addictive. Many who have changed out a few can’t live with the old ones after seeing the difference.
